The

Challenge

As a sophomore at Purdue, a group of 6 other students and I were tasked with improving the LiveTrack feature within the Garmin Connect Application by using data gathered through various methods of research and design to create a more intuitive experience for users.

What is LiveTrack?

LiveTrack is a feature within the Garmin Connect App that allows users to share their activity data and location, live, to their friends and family via sharing methods (email, Facebook, Twitter, GroupTrack, and a copy link.

Research

Key Takeaways

Research
  1. From conducting a heuristic analysis, we found that the current app had issues with help and documentation, consistency and standards, aesthetic and minimalists design, and recognition rather than recall

2. From our competitive analysis, our main takeaways included insights about discoverability (onboarding and feature location), sharing options (texting and OS share sheet), and viewing information (in-app viewing experience). We identified that these would be our main focus on improving LiveTrack.

  3. From our surveys and interviews, we found:

    1. Over half of Garmin device users had never seen or heard of LiveTrack and therefore haven't used it

    2. Of the users who have seen or heard of the feature stated that they simply didn't feel a need to use it

    3. Users typically discovered LiveTrack through word of mouth from running or activity groups

    4. Main reasons for not using LiveTrack was a feeling that "nobody cares where I am" which would eventually be something we focused on in our redesigns

Sketches

Design

We did multiple iterative rounds of sketching based on insights from our research and personas to find solutions to many of the problems identified in the heuristic analysis, survey, and interviews.

Final Design

The goal was to enhance the Garmin Connect mobile app by creating an onboarding process, modifying the LiveTrack help page, and improving the LiveTrack home page. We wanted these aspects and features to enhance the user experience and ease of use of the application. We made sure the design of the sketches would remain consistent with Garmin's current design style. We used Sketch and InVision to create an interactive prototype, view it here.

Testing

Testing

To test our redesigned LiveTrack pages, we conducted a focus group aiming to get opinions on the added features and to see if the users understood the new features. We used a focus group because of its more conversational, relaxed, and comfortable feel.

Some key takeaways:

  • The onboarding was successful and helpful for understanding

  • The friend notifications should not be in the news feed, but a more prominent location

  • The group view was useful for running groups and therefore should possibly be implemented outside of the challenges section
